Candidacy Announcement

October 20, 2009

Dear Friend,

I have had the pleasure of being represented by Senator Ken Cuccinelli in the 37th State Senate District since his special election in 2002. I believe that he has provided a strong voice for Republican values and has brought much needed leadership to the Senate Republican Caucus. That is why he is gathering the state-wide support for his election to Attorney General that will lead to his victory on November 3rd. Upon the declaration of his victory by the state, I intend to announce my candidacy for the VA 37th Senate District seat.

It will be critical to keep the 37th district in Republican hands. It is the only Republican Senate district in Fairfax County. Republicans currently hold the majority in the House of Delegates, but have a close 19-21 minority in the Senate. With Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling there to break any ties, at least maintaining this narrow split will be vital to passing Governor Bob Mc Donnell's great ideas for Virginia. Considering that this Senate will determine the new political boundaries based on the 2010 census, the attention of all of Virginia will be on this hard-fought special election.

We need leadership in Richmond that recognizes government is there to protect the rights of all to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (equal opportunity, not equal outcomes) resulting in top priorities of security, justice, infrastructure and education. We need leaders who understand economies are cyclical and that government maximizing its revenue stream and spending all it can collect in good economic times is a recipe for economic disaster. It is time we send leaders to Richmond who are seeking to protect the rights of Virginians through limiting the infringement of governmental control on our personal lives. We need leaders who will represent the people to the government, not become a part of big government.

As the only Republican to win Fairfax County-wide in 2003, my candidacy would bring a double advantage - a solid track record as an elected official and the demonstrated ability to win in the 37th senate district. My track record as an elected member of the Fairfax County School Board is one of standing strong for common sense traditional Virginian ideals of holding government accountable to its intended role and responsibility. While on the school board, my reputation was for bringing a common sense, process-oriented, solutions-focused approach to problem solving, not just throwing money at problems and hoping for the best. My campaign record demonstrated the ability to win the 37th district not just once but in 3 county-wide campaigns. Thanks to high energy campaigns with great volunteers and people supporting me, we were winners in those precincts in 1999, 2003 and even 2007, which was a very difficult year for Republican candidates.

Thank you for your support in the past. Please join me as I continue to work hard for a Republican victory on November 3rd for Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli. I would greatly appreciate your prayers and your support as I prepare for the possibility of this important special election.
